  • NIKE - JORDAN DEAL

Let’s start with the early 1980s, Michael Jordan played for the North Carolina Tar Heels from 1981 to 1984 for total of 3 seasons. His team accounted an 88-13 record when he was in Tar Heels. Michael actually won the Naismith player of the year award in 1984 he averaged 17.7 points a game during the 3 seasons. His crowning achievement came  on 29 march 1982 during the NCAA finals where he scored the game winning shot over the Georgetown hoist to be crowned the NCAA champ.

Fast forward to few years to the NBA draft night in 1984, he was drafted the 3rd overall by the struggling Chicago Bulls. David Falk was Michael Jordan’s representative at the time when he was drafted he was shopping around looking for a shoe deal for Michael Jordan.

Michael Jordan at the time went on saying on paper the he was only wanting to sign a deal with adidas and they too wanted Michael but in 1984 adidas we’re actually struggling and we’re not able to give Michael Jordan a good deal. Converse too told David and Michael that all they could offer Michael the converse weapon similar to what magic and bird had, they can’t envision a young Michael endorsed above the likes of already established players like Bird and Magic. That wasn’t good enough though he wanted his own signature shoe so he immediately took a meeting with the new upstart Nike, his mom actually convinced Michael to go for the meeting and to give Nike an offer.

Michael ended up signing with Nike for $500000 over 5 hears and the air Jordan was born.

  • JORDAN 1 STORY

Air Jordan 1 was designed by Peter Moore famed sneaker designer for Nike and adidas.

The shoe featured a leather upper, a rubber cup shoe, a beautiful wings logo and an aerosol unit added for comfort. The shoe was awfully similar to Nike be true to your school Nike Dunks but the air Jordan had something special it had Michael Jordan.

The air Jordan debuted on November 16 1984 against Philadelphia 76ers Michael dawn the air Jordan in the Chicago Color’s at that night of his rookie season but something here didn’t add up as Nike released a commercial with black bars covering the black and red air Jordan’s that in October 18th the NBA threw them out of the game but how. Nike claims that the NBA banned the black and red air Jordan 1 because it violated the NBA uniform policy but the truth is that never happened.

In 1984, the bulls preseason game Michael Jordan wore a variety of sneakers but the most commonly he wore the nike air ship he wore the black and red pair along with the white and red pair which were player exclusive, exclusively made for Michael Jordan.

Nike had hopes that after 4 years with Michael Jordan they would sell 3 million worth of shoes but after just 1 year with Michael Jordan it sold a 126 million worth shoes. Yup that’s absolutely absurd for a young rookie.

Jordan 1 designed by Peter Moore retailed for 65 US dollars and came out in a variety of Colours; the Chicago’s , the black and red, the shadows, the royals, the black towels, and much more.

Michael did a ton of spectacular feats while wearing the Air Jordan 1 but they all paled in comparison to what he single handedly did in his 2nd season in April 20th by scoring a 63 point as a rookie against the juggernaut inside the Boston guard. After only playing only 18 games in his second season because of a broken foot, Michael was encouraged to sit out the rest of the season he instead insisted on coming back and leading the charge and help bulls secure a 1986 playoffs spot.

This all added up on the popularity of the Jordan 1.

  • Current scenario

The Jordan 1 is still one of the most loved shoe in the sneaker world and day in and day out there have been several retro versions released by Nike in order to keep the hype of the iconic shoe that started the era of Nike Air Jordan.
