 Jordans are some of the most popular shoes of all time if not the most popular. You have probably seen then in hands of young kids NBA superstar athletes and even 70 year old grandpas. These sneakers were carefully designed every single minute detail considered and perfected for the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan.

And then there is this one black sheep, you guys already know which Jordan I am talking about, the Air Jordan 2.


DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE:-

This is Bruce Kilgore, the person responsible for designing one of the Nike’s most successful shoe lines, The Nike Air Force 1.

In 1986, Bruce Kilgore along with Air Jordan 1 designer, Peter Moore were tasked to design the Air Jordan 2. This was not going to be easy since the Air Jordan 1 was a big success. Designing the Air Jordan 2 would demand some bold design direction and risk taking, and that’s exactly what they did.


Nike’s whole idea behind Air Jordan 2 was to make a luxury basketball shoe, a sneaker that could perform well on court and could also look good with the tuxedo outfit, something fashionable but still performance based.


Prototype for the Air Jordan 2 contained a Air Jordan 1 upper with Jordan 2 sole. It’s very strange to look at, it looks so weird. They made another prototype that looked no where near to the final product, a low cut version of the prototype was used by the Chicago Bull’s cheerleaders.

When the time arrived for the production of the shoe they only chose the most premium material for their superstar.


Upon its release in 1982, the Air Jordan 2 featured the Italian leather in a layer of Faux Iguana skin to give it a more luxurious and high fashion feel. Oddly enough the shoe didn’t bear any kind of swoosh branding, they went with the air Jordan logo on the tongue and the Nike text logo on the heel and bottom sole.


The sneaker also featured a really cool heel counter for support and a giant air bag in the heel, staying true to the theme of luxury. Nike decided to make the shoe in Italy which made the shoe really expensive, and it retailed at $100 per pair.


The Air Jordan 2 was released in 2 original colorways, the white, red and grey and the white, red and black models. In 1987, they released the low cut version of the Air Jordan 2 released in the same colorways .


MJ’s PERFORMANCE THAT SEASON:-


MJ was first seen in the Air Jordan 2 in a commercial advertisement doing his famous rock bye baby dunk. Entering his third season after an injury Michael Jordan was ready to prove that he is the rising star of NBA. He went on to break records that season, he became the second player after Wilt Chamberlain to score 3000 points a season and averaged 37.1 points a game, which I think by today’s standards is still pretty insane. And if that wasn’t enough MJ tacked up a 100 blocks and 200 steals, and he did all of this while wearing Air Jordan 2 on his feet.

ITS IMPACT ON THE SNEAKER WORLD:-

The Air Jordan 2 has some notable collaborations and has also been retroed several times. In facts it was one of the first sneaker that Nike retroed. One might say that “ Air Jordan 2 were a failure” seeing its impact on the Jordan line as compared to the OG Jordans. The Air Jordan 2 is the most under appreciated and the most unpopular model of the Jordan line.


After the Air Jordan 2 were released, Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore were dismissed from adding to the Air Jordan line up. Even Michael Jordans himself didn’t liked the shoe despite having a great season in them.
