Now let’s dive into the story of Air Jordan 4.
DESIGNING AIR JORDAN 4:-
In 1988, MJ was not that interested in signing Nike back, but thanks to Tinker Hatfield, Nike was successful in renewing the contract with Michael Jordan by wooing him back one of the most perfectly designed silhouettes of all time, the Air Jordan 3.
Proving himself to be the only designer for the job, Tinker Hatfield embarked on the journey of creating the Nike Air 3’s successor sneaker but this time he will approach design with functionality in mind.
You see, prior to Air Jordan 4, a lot of the design for Michael Jordan’s shoe was done keeping in mind a luxury basketball shoe. Tinker of course wanted to keep the luxury feel but he didn’t want it to be the main focus of design.
Hatfield kept many of the Air Jordan 3’s design elements while designing Air Jordan 4, keeping the jumpman logo on tongue but this time with addition of the world flight in a flowing script below, and also keeping Nike Air logo on the back. Both shoes featured the same air unit in the heel.
PERFORMANCE OF AIR JORDAN 4:-
Now let’s look at some of the technical features that Hatfield and his team added to the shoe.
A new polyurethane over molded mesh technology decorated the tongue and panels on the upper. Another important functional element of the Air Jordan 4 was the sturdy support wings that housed the laces at top of the shoe and near the toe box. This gave options to the wearers to lace the sneaker in 18 different ways. As for the upper Hatfield and his team opted for synthetic leather allied Durabuck.
The sole on the Air Jordan 4 were exactly the same as the sole of the Air Jordan 3 but worth a slightly higher visual rise in the idle of the sole. Another iconic feature was the pull tab on the heel
MARKET PERFORMANCE OF AIR JORDAN 4:-
In 1989 Nike released the Air Jordan 4 for a price of $110, in 4 colorways.
MJ played his one of the best statical season ever in Jordan 4s. And as if the statics and the shot that MJ received were not enough for the power of a crisp pair of Air Jordan 4, the sneaker reputation was further increased by Spike Lee. The marketing campaign for Jordan 4s saw Michael Jordan and Mars Blackmon appearing together once again in the commercial.
10 years after the initial release, Nike retroed the JORDAN 4 in a variety of colorways, like the Columbia and the Oreo, and they also changed the heel logo from original Nike Air logo to the jumpman logo. Over the years Nike has given us some classy colorways of the Jordan 4s and also some controversial and downright hated, loud and crazy colorways, but colorways were not the only thing that fell into the scrutiny.

The quality and the appearance of the silhouette itself was also beleaved to be different from the original and gotten worse over time as more colorways were dropped. Consumer outcry about these issues prompted the Jordan brand to introduce the retro remaster initiative in 2005 which not only promised to deliver a better made retro but also brought back the Nike Air logo.
Since then the sneaker has performed really well on the market and almost all its retro releases were successful.
